SPRING SUPER GLUE CHALLENGE
Think Turtle is calling on its turtle friends and supporters to help raise funds for a critically important medical supply used to treat injured turtles in Ontario.
With turtle season about to ramp up, the Ontario Turtle Conservation Center (OTCC), Ontario's turtle hospital, has reached out to let us know it is running low on the specialized super glue its veterinary team relies on to repair fractured turtle shells.
As we move into June, the busiest month of turtle season, there will be a significant increase in the number of turtles crossing roads. Unfortunately, this also means more turtles will be admitted to the hospital in the coming weeks with serious shell injuries from vehicle strikes. To treat these injuries, the OTCC medical team relies on two specific types of super glue used to attach fasteners to a turtle's shell, thereby stabilizing and mending fractures.
The glue is not used on wounds. It is used as part of a veterinary procedure that helps repair damaged shells and gives injured turtles a chance to recover and eventually return to the wild.
THE CHALLENGE & GOAL
Please join Think Turtle and friends as we work to help the turtle hospital stock up on the specific adhesive used to treat turtles admitted with shell injuries.
The Spring Super Glue Challenge is a fundraising initiative to raise the $917.88 needed to purchase 84 bottles of this adhesive, taxes included.
The turtle hospital needs to have this essential product readily available. It is expensive and can sometimes be difficult to source in large quantities. A small 4 ml bottle typically costs between $11.73 and $13.99 plus HST.
At Walmart, where the product is often available at the lowest price, it is frequently out of stock. Online retailers such as Amazon also place limits on the quantity that can be purchased. LePage manufacturers have previously donated some bottles but, for legal reasons, will not endorse the product for this use; therefore, further donations are no longer available.
To help offset this financial burden on the OTCC, the goal of the Spring Super Glue Challenge is to raise $917.88 to purchase 84 bottles of this essential adhesive. Thanks to a generous discount from Home Hardware, every dollar raised will help ensure the turtle hospital can stock up before potential supply shortages and price increases.
A contribution of $10, or any amount you can give, will help us move closer to our goal and ensure that injured turtles receive the care they need.
HOW TO CONTRIBUTE
We would appreciate your contribution to the Spring Super Glue Challenge. By helping purchase one of the 84 bottles of adhesive needed by the turtle hospital, you become part of a collective effort to ensure injured turtles receive the care they need.
Contributions can be made via e-transfer to thinkturtle@yahoo.com, by cheque, or by cash at the Think Turtle office in L'amable if you are in the Bancroft area.
Thank you for being part of this community effort to help injured turtles receive the medical treatment they need.
Once the Spring Super Glue Challenge has concluded, we will arrange delivery of the adhesive to the OTCC.
Any funds specifically received for super glue after the fundraising goal has been reached will be used to purchase additional bottles for the OTCC.
If you would prefer to purchase bottles of LePage Gel Control Super Glue or LePage Ultra Gel Control Super Glue yourself and drop them off at the OTCC in Peterborough, or have them shipped directly to the hospital at Ontario Turtle Conservation Center, 2785 Television Road, Peterborough, Ontario K9L 1E9.
If you plan to do so, we would be grateful if you could let us know so we can track the total number of bottles contributed through the challenge.
If you have any questions about the Spring Super Glue Challenge or other turtle-related matters, please phone or text Think Turtle at 647-606-9537.
IMPORTANT CLOSING NOTES ABOUT INJURED TURTLES
If you find an injured turtle, please call the Ontario Turtle Conservation Center Hotline at 705-741-5000 while you are with the turtle, no matter where you are in Ontario.
Never attempt to treat an injured turtle, regardless of how minor the injury may appear or how knowledgeable you may feel about providing first aid. The turtle may have sustained internal injuries that can only be detected by a veterinarian through proper examination and diagnostic imaging.
It is illegal to remove a turtle from the wild or treat injured turtles in Ontario without proper authorization and qualifications. Although repairing a turtle shell may seem straightforward, it should never be attempted by anyone other than a qualified veterinarian trained in these procedures.
Super glue is not used on wounds. It is applied to fasteners attached to the turtle's shell during shell repair. Improper use can result in glue entering wounds, causing tissue irritation, worsening infections, creating toxic effects, and leading to other complications that may seriously harm or even kill an injured turtle.
If you suspect concerning activities involving wildlife in Ontario, please report them to Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) at 1-833-926-4625, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry TIPS Line at 1-877-847-7667, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
Please leave all turtle-related medical treatment to qualified veterinarians.
Please share this post with family, friends, and associates. Your support can help us reach a wider audience and make a meaningful difference for injured turtles across Ontario.
If you have any questions, please text or phone Kelly at Think Turtle at 647-606-9537.
Thank you for considering a contribution and for supporting efforts to help injured turtles recover and, when deemed fit, return to the wild.
