PUMPKIN CARVING CONTEST 2026
As another turtle season winds down, we're keeping up our annual Halloween tradition with a little fun, creativity, and friendly competition!
Calling all pumpkin carving enthusiasts! Whether you're a seasoned pumpkin-carving pro or trying it for the first time, join Think Turtle's annual Pumpkin Carving Contest and show us what you can create!
Halloween is the perfect time to let your imagination run wild, and pumpkins offer endless possibilities. From spooky faces and silly expressions to intricate works of art, every pumpkin can become something special. We love that this Halloween tradition can be environmentally friendly, too!
Pumpkins: A Halloween Favorite with an Eco-Friendly Twist!
One of the best things about decorating with real pumpkins is that they're biodegradable, and you can use almost every part after Halloween. With a little creativity, your pumpkin can keep giving long after the trick-or-treaters go home!
Here are a few ways to make the most of your pumpkin:
• Keep a tradition alive! Pumpkin carving is a fun way to bring family and friends together and create lasting Halloween memories.
• Cook up something delicious! Use flesh from fresh, suitable pumpkins to make homemade pies, soups, muffins, or bread.
• Save those seeds! Roast them for a tasty snack, or dry and save seeds from a suitable variety to try growing your own pumpkins next year.
• Get creative in the kitchen! Try making pumpkin butter, a spicy sauce, or even pickled rind.
• Give it a second purpose! Turn an uncarved or still-sturdy pumpkin into a festive fall planter by placing a potted plant inside.
• Return it to the earth! Compost any remaining pumpkin pieces to help enrich your garden soil.
A little planning can turn one pumpkin into Halloween decorations, delicious treats, and something beneficial for your garden. That's a pretty impressive encore for a humble pumpkin!
Ready, Set, Carve!
Taking part couldn't be easier! Carve a pumpkin that's scary, funny, adorable, wonderfully weird, or completely one of a kind, then send us a photo of your creation.
Prizes will be awarded for our judges' favorite designs, plus the satisfaction of knowing your pumpkin masterpiece made an impression!
Need a little inspiration? Search online for pumpkin carving ideas. You'll find everything from simple beginner designs to elaborate creations for those who enjoy a challenge. We'd be especially delighted to see a turtle or two among the entries!

A Little Pumpkin Carving Tip!
Timing is everything if you want your jack-o'-lantern looking its best on Halloween night. Try carving it a few days beforehand, removing the seeds and stringy pulp, and keeping it somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight. Battery-operated LED lights are a great alternative to candles, helping avoid unnecessary heat while keeping your pumpkin glowing.
Keeping it green and totally fun this Halloween! Happy carving!

Think Turtle Conservation Initiative's contest organizers, judges, sponsors, and others directly involved in administering the contest, along with members of their immediate families or households, are ineligible to enter.
2 – Contest Categories: The judges' favorite pumpkin carving in each category and age division will receive a prize with an approximate value of $25. A total of six prizes will be awarded, one for each category and age division. If no eligible entries are received in a particular category and age division, no prize will be awarded for that combination.
The pumpkin carving categories include: Turtle-themed or Any Theme.
Age divisions include 12 and under, 13–17, and 18+.
3 – How to Enter: Please email a photo of the pumpkin carved by you, or by the youth you are submitting an entry for, to Think Turtle Conservation Initiative at thinkturtle@yahoo.com. We will feature submitted pumpkin photos in a Halloween tribute post shared through Think Turtle Conservation Initiative's Facebook group.
5 – Judging: Three judges who are not directly affiliated with Think Turtle Conservation Initiative will select the winning pumpkin carvings.
Entries will be evaluated on creativity, originality, overall appearance, and carving craftsmanship, with consideration for the participant's age division. Winners will be selected based on the judges' evaluation of the designs, not by random draw.
6 – Prizes: Each winner will have a choice of a $25 gift certificate for the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre (OTCC) shop, a Think Turtle conservation T-shirt, or a Think Turtle winter toque, subject to availability. And, of course, automatic bragging rights for being selected as a pumpkin carving champ!
Each selected winner must correctly answer an age-appropriate skill-testing question before receiving their prize. Don't sweat this for even a second. Easy peasy, promise!
Prizes will be mailed to winners, or, if they are in the Bancroft area, Think Turtle Conservation Initiative can arrange pickup or drop-off.
