SUMMER SUPER GLUE CHALLENGE
Hello from Kelly at Think Turtle Conservation Initiative
Last Autumn, with the help of our friends, we were able to send the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre (OTCC), home of Ontario’s turtle hospital, “81” bottles of super glue consisting of the two specific types they use: Lepage Gel Control Super Glue and Lepage Ultra Gel Control Super Glue the medical team uses.
The OTCC has reached out to Think Turtle to let us know with over “1,300” injured turtle admissions, primarily since May, they are running low on super glue! The super glue is “not” used on wounds. It is used to attach fasteners to the Turtle’s shell so the shell fractures can be set and mended. Making a vital product used to treat injured turtles.
THE CHALLENGE & GOAL
Please join Think Turtle and friends as we look to help the turtle hospital stock up on the “specific” type of adhesive they use when treating turtles admitted with shell injuries.
The ”Summer Super Glue Challenge” is a fundraising initiative to raise the $851.43 needed to purchase “84” bottles of this adhesive.
The turtle hospital needs to have this essential product readily available. It is expensive, and product shortages among manufacturers and suppliers often occur. This adhesive product typically costs $8 – $17 plus HST for a small 4ml bottle.
At Walmart, where it is the lowest price, it is always out of stock.
Amazon sets limits on how many can be ordered.
LePage manufacturers have in the past donated some bottles but, for legal reasons, will not endorse the product for this use; therefore, further donations are no longer available.
We have found a Canadian supplier that has offered an excellent discount because we would be placing a large order, $8.97 per bottle before tax. As such, we aim to help ease the OTCC’s financial burden and acquire the stock they need before possible availability shortages and subsequent price increases. We are looking to raise $851.43 for seven dozen bottles (84).
Your contribution towards purchasing a single bottle of super glue, will help us reach the goal set and make a significant difference in helping us meet this goal.
HOW TO CONTRIBUTE
We would appreciate your contribution to the Summer Super Glue Challenge. By sending the funds to go towards purchasing one of the “84” bottles of this adhesive we are looking to purchase, you become part of our collective effort to meet our goal. Contributions can be made via e-transfer to thinkturtle@yahoo.com, by cheque, or by cash at the Think Turtle office in L’amableL’amable if you are in the Bancroft area. Thank you for being part of this community effort to help injured turtles receive the necessary medical treatment.
Once the super glue challenge has concluded, we will arrange delivery to the OTCC (www.ontarioturtle.ca).
Note: Any funds explicitly received for the purchase of super glue after the goal has been reached will be put towards purchasing additional bottles of super glue for OTCC.
If you prefer to purchase bottles of Lepage Gel Control Super Glue or Lepage Ultra Gel Control Super Glue to drop off at the OTCC in Peterborough or have them shipped there, that would be fantastic. The shipping address is Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre, 2785 Television Road, Peterborough, Ontario K9L 1E9. We would be grateful if you could let us know when you plan to do that so we have an idea of the end-of-challenge quantities to be delivered to OTCC. Thank you.
If you have any questions about the Summer Super Glue Challenge or other turtle-related matters, please phone or text Think Turtle at 647-606-9537.
IMPORTANT CLOSING NOTE ABOUT INJURED TURTLES
If you find an injured turtle, please call the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre Hotline at 705-741-5000 when you are with the Turtle, no matter where you are in Ontario. “NEVER” attempt to treat an injured turtle, no matter how mild you may think an injury is or how knowledgeable you feel about administering first aid. The Turtle may have sustained internal injuries that can only be detected by a veterinarian and x-ray.
It is, in fact, illegal to remove a turtle from the wild and for someone not officially qualified and registered with the province to treat injured Ontario turtles. Although using super glue to treat a turtle shell injury may seem like something almost anyone can do, it is far from that and should “NEVER” be attempted or used by anyone other than a fully qualified veterinarian trained in such practices.
Super glue is “NOT” used on wounds; it is applied to the fasteners secured to the turtle shell as part of mending shell fractures. The improper use or application of super glue poses a risk of the glue entering wounds and causing tissue irritation, which can aggravate infections, result in toxicity, and lead to other complications that could cause further harm to an injured turtle, including death. Preventing an injured turtle from getting proper medical attention equates to cruelty and abuse. If you suspect concerning activities in Ontario, please report this to the Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) at 1-833-9-ANIMAL (1-833-926-4625) or the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF)TIPS LINE at 1-877-TIPS-MNRF (847-7667) or the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-222-8477. Please leave any turtle-related medical treatments to qualified veterinarians.
Please share this post with family, friends, and associates. Your action can make a significant difference in our fundraising efforts and help us reach a wider audience. Together, we can make a greater impact on the recovery of turtle species in Ontario.
If you have any questions, please text or phone Kelly at Think Turtle at 647-606-9537.
Thank you for considering a contribution and for supporting the efforts to treat injured turtles in Ontario, allowing them to recover and be returned to the wild when deemed fit.
